e-con Systems™’ adds Linux support to it’s 5MP MIPI Camera

Today, MIPI CSI-2 is a widely used interface – generating a huge buzz as a high-performance, affordable, and easy-to-use option. It also comes with key features, such as high bandwidth, low power consumption, superior flexibility, scalability, and more. The multi-core processors in a MIPI CSI-2 ensure this interface uses fewer CPU resources to enhance its performance.

Furthermore, with four image data lanes – MIPI CSI-2 has a maximum bandwidth of 10 Gb/s and data transmission rates of up to 2.5 Gb/s each. So, this rapid and credible protocol-driven interface can handle video resolutions ranging from 1080p to 8K and beyond. These are some of the reasons why many engineers prefer MIPI CSI-2 cameras over USB cameras.

Performance highlights of the latest MIPI interface

  • RAW-16 or 24 color depth for improved High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • Better Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)
  • Multi-exposure and multi-range sensor fusion
  • Latency Reduction and Transport Efficiency (LRTE)
  • Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) compression

MIPI driver and Linux compatibility

MIPI drivers are crucial to empower the camera module to be quickly plugged in and played. In addition, the driver source code for these cameras is made accessible by e-con Systems to all the customers, enabling the driver package to be updated on all carrier boards and SOMs easily.

The integration of MIPI and V4L2 (Video for Linux 2), a Linux-based API, together make the process of interfacing cameras easier, which makes them suitable for demanding applications such as high-resolution image capture and video streaming in Linux-based embedded systems.

On the plus side, MIPI cameras can be made appropriate for streaming video applications by any of the V4L2 applications. Specifically, on NVIDIA platforms, Gstreamer is used as a multimedia framework for better audio and video applications.

Linux-supported MIPI cameras offered by e-con Systems

In addition to MIPI cameras, e-con Systems offers Linux compatibility for USB cameras leveraging QtCAM software to create video and audio streaming. We have also added Linux support to the e-CAM55_37x – 5MP MIPI camera board – the world’s first MIPI CSI-2 Camera Interface Reference Design for AM37x/DM37x and OMAP35x TI Processors.

The Linux software package for the 5MP MIPI Camera board includes V4L2 Driver and a sample viewfinder application. Please check our documentation page for the Linux manuals.

Sensor support for e-con’s MIPI cameras

The MIPI cameras offered e-con Systems leverage sensors from world-class players, such as Sony, onsemi, and OmniVision. These sensors are ideal for applications requiring:

  • Ultra-low light cameras
  • Monochrome cameras
  • Global shutter or rolling shutter cameras
  • Synchronized multi-camera solutions
